The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
